July 10 to July 23, 1998 - AR98010
San Francisco, CA to San Diego, CA

Project: Euphausiids and Canyon Habitat Observations (ECHO) - Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC)
Intended study area: San Francisco Bay to Monterey, within Monterey Bay, and en route to San Diego
Intended work: ADCP survey, hydroacoustic survey, CTD (rosette) casts and water sampling, plankton net tows (bongo nets, Multiple-Opening-Closing Net System (MOCNESS), and Issacs-Kidd Mid-water Trawl (IKMT)), underwater video, SCUBA diving, marine mammal and bird observation
Principal Investigator(s): Roger Hewitt, SWFSC

Objectives:
Investigate multi-frequency methods for acoustic target strength measurement and taxa idenfication and interpret diurnal patterns in both the vertical and horizontal distribution of zooplankton and the relative distributions of marine mammal and seabird predators in the waters adjacent to the Monterey submarine canyon.

Work performed on this trip:

Several small area hydroacoustic surveys were run in Monterey Bay. CTD casts and water sampling was conducted at several sites along the survey lines. Three types of nets were used to collect krill (euphausiids) and plankton samples at several sites along the survey lines. The 3 types of nets used were:

The nets were towed in the water at several depths and washed down when brought back on deck. Two teams of SCUBA divers went into the water while the ship was anchored near Santa Cruz, Callifornia. One team of divers inspected the McArthur's 2 propellers while another team inspected and cleaned the hull-mounted transducers used for the hydroacoustic survey. Underwater video was also recorded with a camera lowered from the starboard side of the ship. Bird and marine mammal observers were also aboard making detailed observations of their sitings.

Scientists from SWFSC, the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC) and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) participated in this project. Also onboard was a teacher from Eugene, Oregon who was participating in NOAA's Teacher at Sea program.
