March 24 to March 27, 1998 - Jason Project
Monterey Bay, CA to Monterey Bay, CA

Project: Jason IX Project
Intended study area: Monterey Bay, California
Intended work: Biological Oceanography
Principal Investigator(s): Drs. Baldo Marinovic and Don Croll, University of California at Santa Cruz

Objectives:
To study the abundance of zooplankton in Monterey Bay and how El Nino conditions have effected them.

Work performed on this trip:
Station work in water depths of 75 to 1000 meters. A CTD cast and bongo net tow was done at each station. CTD casts were made to help determine if El Nino conditions have effected nutrient levels in the water. Bongo nets were towed to collect plankton and krill. The work was done during both daylight and nightime hours.

During daylight hours from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM, 5 live broadcasts of the deck operations were sent to Jason Primary Interactive Network Sites (PINS) sites throughout the United States. The Jason IX Project is "a year-round scientific expedition designed to excite and engage students in science and technology and to motivate and provide professional development for teachers. " Each day two student argonauts worked with Dr. Sylvia Earle and principal investigators Drs. Baldo Marinovic and Don Croll.

On Wednesday, March 25 while anchored in the bay, visitors were brought out to the ship by smaller boats for a reception being held on the ship. They were served lunch and were allowed to tour the ship.
