Plankton Tows

Many different methods can be used to collect and observe marine organisms in the water column. Nets can be used to collect the organisms and acoustic equipment, such as an echo sounder, can be used to track the movement of the organisms in the water column.

Listed below are a few of the methods that have been used to collect marine organisms aboard the McARTHUR.

Bongo tow
Beam trawl
Manta (or Neuston) tow
Mocness (Multiple-Opening-Closing Net System)
Tucker trawl
Vertical bongo tow
Vertical tow (using a conical or ring net)
