NOAA Ship DAVID STARR JORDAN

Engineering Department

There are six people in the Engineering Department. They are responsible for the highest light on the main mast to the lowest pump in the bilge, and everything mechanical in between. We have one Chief Marine Engineer (CME), a First, Second and Junior Engineer (1AE, 2AE and JE), one Engine Utilityman (EU) and one Wiper (W). The Engineering Department operates, maintains and repairs all propulsion and auxiliary machinery. The department also maintains the shipboard electrical system, deck machinery, launch engines, engineering spaces, ventilation, refrigeration, hydraulic, and sanitation systems.
