Shoreline Verification
FAIRWEATHER personnel conduct limited shoreline verification in addition to updating depth data on charts. Shoreline data include items such as reefs, rocks, ledges, wrecks, and cultural features. "Near shore" verification occurs during low tide using jet boats and a skiff.
GPS Shoreline GPS positioning equipment is used to record the exact locations of rocks, navigational aids, docks and other significant items affecting the charts. These data are used in conjunction with aerial photographs and LIDAR data to compile an accurate representation of the shoreline.
Wreck When new rocks, wrecks, or other uncharted dangers are discovered that pose an immediate threat to vessels, the FAIRWEATHER notifies the United States Coast Guard. A Notice to Mariners is generated alerting mariners of changes to the chart. Read more about Notice to Mariners...
