Survey Department

The MILLER FREEMAN has one Chief Survey Technician (CST), one Survey Technician (ST) and one Assistant Survey Technician (AST). The Survey Department assists in nearly all aspects of oceanographic data and biological specimen collections. It interfaces directly with the Scientific Party and implements safe and effective deployments for a variety of scientific research equipment including, CTD casts, Niskin Bottle sampling, plankton tows, oceanographic equipment mooring recoveries and deployments, and fisheries stock assessment mid-water and bottom trawling. The Survey Technicians manage the data collected by the ship's scientific computer system (SCS) and ensure sensor quality for all the sensors connected to the SCS system. The Department also maintains the survey office, equipment, lab spaces, scientific freezers and assists in maintaining navigation equipment, deck logs, nautical publications and charts.
