Gyro compass
- Sperry MK227 gyro.
Global Positioning System(GPS)
- There are several GPS receivers on the McArthur II. Data outputs from the GPS receivers are available for scientific use and are continually recorded by SCS. A networked GPS Time Code Receiver is presently time synching the shipboard data acquisition system computers. Software is available for time synching the networked PC-based scientific computers.
Navigation
- Navigation software package - Nobeltec's Visual Navigation Suite is the navigation software package used on theMcArthur II. The navigation program is continually run on the bridge while underway and has the ability to receive location input from the installed GPS receivers. Traditional paper charts are used as well.
Radar
- The McArthur II has two Furuno ARPA Consoles, one X-band and one S- band with chart overlay. Both radars are used for collision avoidance and navigation.
- A Furuno AIS (Automated Identification System) is used to share information about the McArthur III with other vessels and vice versa. This information includes position, speed, course, size, destination, and CPA (closest point of approach). AIS contacts can be graphically depicted on the X-band radar scope.
Depth Sounders
- Abyss IES-10 Echosounder - used primarily in areas of shallow water.
- Simrad ES-60 - Fisheries Echosounder in deeper water.
Satellite Weather Receiver
- A Garmin satellite receiver displays near real-time meteorological and oceanographic information in a map format. Displayed information includes atmospheric pressure, visibility, sea state, swell period, wind speed and direction, and sea surface temperature.
NAVTEX
- NAVTEX Receiver - installed on the bridge. It is used for receiving and printing the international automated medium frequency (518 kHz) direct-printing service which provides navigational and meteorological warnings and forecasts, as well as urgent marine safety information to ships.
Weather Fax
- A medium frequency/high frequency, facsimile receiver system for the reception of broadcast weather facsimile pictures and charts. The weather fax is located in the bridge.
