Engineering

Nancy Foster has a 1250 hp main engine with single screw, twin 300 hp fully azimuthing Z-drives, and a 400 hp bow thruster. Maximum speed with both Z-drives and the main engine is 10.5 knots.

Control of the propulsion system is accomplished by the AUTONAV system. Ship’s propulsion can be operated from five different control stations: forward pilot house, aft pilot house, port bridge wing, starboard bridge wing, or engine room. Four modes of control are available: maneuver mode, cruise mode, autopilot, and Dynamic Positioning, or DP. Maneuver mode allows the control of each propulsion and steering component independently, while cruise mode utilizes the main engine, z-drives, and rudder in a combined mode. Dynamic Positioning incorporates a selected combination of propulsion and steering components to hold a geographic position within strict tolerances or maintain a trackline at slow speed.
